My Dear, It Was An Honor To Have Known You

SCARL is once in again in mourning for one of its volunteers.  Catherine Pickler passed away on March 8, 2010.   This intelligent, independent woman will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.  Her hard work and giving spirit was an inspiration to us all.  Our sympathies go out to her family & friends.

Catherine sprinkled her conversations with humor and wisdom.  Many an enjoyable Saturday morning was spent chatting, smoking, and drinking coffee in her company.

Generous with all she cared about, she left this world with her life lessons well learned.

Quite simply, we loved her.

Did you know?

A cat's heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute.

How to wash a toilet

submitted by Ginny Churchill

This was simply too much of a time saver not to share

1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl.

2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid.

4. The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this.

5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a 'power-wash' and rinse'.

6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door.

7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift the lid.

8. The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he will dry
himself off.

9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

It's been more than a year since I adopted "Loverboy," now known as Mr. Squeaky, and since then we've added a new friend.

A co-worker found her outside and was kind enough to let me take her home. It took a few days, but now Mr. Squeaky and Midnight are the best of friends!

DANGER! DANGER!

Once again, the issue of Rawhide treats has been raised.  One of our readers brought it to our attention when her dog got the "end piece" of the rawhide stuck in it's throat.  Luckily the dog is fine now but it cost her $1,300 to fix!

Below is a reprinted article from AskaBreeder.com

Rawhide treats for dogs seem to be EVERYWHERE! We are encouraged to give rawhide treats to our dogs and most dogs love them. It does offer them something to chew on besides your shoes or carpet... however, what most people don't know is that rawhide treats are VERY dangerous to your dog! All dogs want to chew. Even adult dogs. They enjoy it. I used to think rawhide was a great solution, but now, I am not so sure! I did some research and talked with my vet, and I found out some scary stuff about rawhide dog treats, and other dog chews. Below are some of the things I learned from other websites and my vet, as well as my dog trainer.

Salmonella bacteria is often present especially if the rawhide comes from outside the US. Another problem is arsenic used as a preservative. Yes, arsenic! Other dangerous additives can include antibiotics, (which can kill good bacteria in your dogs intestines) lead, and insecticides. Some countries like Thailand even include pieces of dog and cat skin in these rawhide treats. Health problems from rawhide chews can included sore throat, acute pancreatitis, choking, and intestinal blockage.

You know your dog. You know if something is wrong. If you notice any of these signs, watch him/her closely. If the symptoms persist, perhaps you should take your dog to the vet. Symptoms possibly include the following:

* Vomiting (self explanatory)
* Not eating (again, self explanatory)
* Painful abdomen, hunched appearance
* You know how you walk when your gastrointestinal tract isn't quite right, a dog will also walk slowly and hunch it's back a little.
* Fever or below-normal body temperature
* Diarrhea - Dogs get diarrhea for many reasons. Usually it's because they ate something they shouldn't have. Sometimes it could be due to the change in dog food. It's good to introduce a new brand of dog food slowly.
* Depression-you know your dog.
* Dehydration (diagnosed by sunken eyes, dry mouth and the skin "tents" when pinched)

I haven't had a chance to catch you guys @ adopt. clinic lately, so just a few pics of Bear (Nigel) and BJ.  Have a great day.

I thought I would drop you a line or two about Scout (Rollo) and the family.

A couple of weeks ago he had a wellness visit at the vet and everything is perfect. He is very healthy, happy and full of himself at times.

Scout is about 19 weeks old now and growing fast; he weighs in at better than 40 pounds. (I suspect we are about 1/2 way to full size).

I think he is a pretty smart little pup too; he has learned that when ever he comes back in the house he will get a treat.

When he finishes his business he gets a treat; then proceeds to sit in front of the outside door again like he needs to do more business.

Nope - he just runs outside sniffs around the yard a moment, comes back in and sits down in front of where the treats are.

 Then he starts in with the switch look game – the game goes something like this – Scout sits down, he looks at the treats – looks at me – looks at the treats – looks at me – It’s like he is saying the treats are right there – right in front of you – can’t you see them? - get one out and give it to me... NOW!

 It is just laugh out loud funny and quite often I cave in and give him a small piece of a treat.

Scout also loves to cuddle up with our boys in our den, I use the word cuddle - he actually climbs on top of them and uses them as a pillow.

The boys don’t mind as we all love a little attention, and what’s better than having your furry friend lick your face when you are trying to watch cartoons.

We are working on commands and he has got quite a few down – Sit has been mastered, Come is working pretty well, Stay works indoors (we have off limit areas for children and dogs so he has learned not to enter certain rooms). Fetch is one of his favorite games and some times he will even give you the ball back so you can toss out again.

Scout also loves to go for walks; he is very friendly towards strangers (to him) and the many other dogs in our neighborhood.

We still think he is one of the most handsome dogs we have ever seen and most other people comment on how good looking he is too. (I think he knows it too).

Thank you for providing the opportunity for us to adopt this wonderful furry friend. I guess we helped to save him but I think he is helping to save us too; it just seems like good therapy to be with and love a great dog like Scout.

 Kind regards,

Dan

Here is a picture of Miss Lilly. AJ took it for me. Miss Lilly is growing like a weed. She is so personable. Her & Zoe are getting along better as long as they see each other couple times a week.

 Thanks again
