The Last Issue...and a Foster Mom's Plea

Unless someone steps up to publish it, this will be the last issue of the newsletter.  Due to changes in my life, I will have to give up my position as writer of the newsletter as well as being a foster mom for this wonderful organization.  The newsletter may be missed, but the foster mom part is what I would like to discuss.  I have been fostering for about 5 years now, and have helped an average of 14 dogs (and a couple cats) a year.  This will be a void that will need to be filled!

Throughout my years as a SCARL volunteer, when I mention that someone should become a foster parent, the most common response is, "I could never do that, I'd be too attached to give them up."  My response to this?  Yes.  It hurts.  It hurts every time you watch a pet that you've grown to love go to a new home.  But what hurts worse is the knowledge that if you had not opened your home to this little one his fate would have been to starve to death on the side of the road, get hit by a car, or to be euthanized at the pound.  What you must realize is that when you find this one a home, you are in position to help another one.

What does it take?  You will pick up the pet at a Stanly Co. veterinarian's office (you do NOT pay the vet).   You will bring him home, love him, feed him (sometimes with donated food), pick up after him, and make him feel like one of the family.  You will get him to any vet appointments he will have.  You will take phone calls from prospective forever homes.  If you can, you can bring him to SCARL events & adopt-a-pets.  You will be the one that makes the final decision of what family gets "your" pet.   You will have the peace of mind to know that he is going to the best possible home.  Then, it starts all over again with a new rescued animal.

You will meet the other foster parents...a small, but great group of people!   They are always there for any questions or concerns you may have.  SCARL does not overload your home with foster pets.  I have always kept one at a time with just a couple exceptions when there have been two at my home.   They are grateful for whatever help you give and never try to push you into keeping a foster if it is an inconvenient time for you.

I am asking each and everyone of you...please call 704-983-8626 and offer to foster at least one time this year.

You CAN make a difference!

Thank you very much for a great 5 years & I hope to work with you in the future.

I just wanted to thank you again for letting us adopt Ray (Xray).   He's turned into my best friend such a great dog.  He loves everyone, but he favors me.  If I go inside he wants inside if I go to bed he goes to bed.  He's even getting over his shyness slowly but surely.  His favorite thing to do now is catch mice across the field with the cat, I mean his favorite thing to do now is steal the mice the cat catches across the field.  Thank you again for being such a great caring organization.

JUST ABOUT ANYONE CAN BECOME A FOSTER PARENT...

EVEN YOU!!!

Won't you Volunteer Today?

Hi Debra -

This is Jennifer Kimpler.  We adpoted your foster pup, Shelby, now known as Gabby, two years ago in November.

She is doing great!  We bought seven acres of land in the country and built a modular home here.  Since we now have the space for more dogs, I have adopted a female German Shepherd

and a male Lhasa Apso watcha-ma-call-it.

I have thought about you often and considered how much joy Gabby has brought to our lives.  You have an important job and I want you to know that you are appreciate.  Due partially to your inspiration, I have been volunteering at our local Moore County Animal Shelter and I have become a foster mom!  I just fostered my first three pups.  Two of them went north for adoption but the third is still with me because he had a skin allergy.  I have treated the skin allergy and have an apointment for him to be neutered on November 18th.  At that time, he will be posted on PetFinder.com.

In the meantime, I will be looking for a permanent home for him.  He is a 14 to 16 week old Foxhound mix named Double-Stuff.  I will attach a picture.  If you know of someone who might be interested in him, please let me know.

In the meantime, thank you again for fostering Gabby and for doing what you do.

 Take Care,

Jennifer

Hi Jane!

I just wanted to say hello and give you an update on Beau (Hunter). He has been

doing great! I have absolutely enjoyed him. He is so sweet and is still a

major snuggler. He travels well and likes to spend time in the mountains

and at grammie and poppa's(they have lots of windows and landings). I just

wanted to thank you for being such a great foster mom to him. I could not

of asked for a better companion. I love him so much! He is absolutely

 perfect : )

I have attached a picture of him. He is getting so big!

If I get any good pictures over the holidays I will make sure to send

 those in.

 Have a Happy Thanksgiving,

 Emilie Schaefer
